I’m Miriam Hersh, veteran Federal Head Start Preschool Director from Brooklyn, New York. With a MA in Special Education, I have been privileged to teach the entire gamut of age ranges over the past thirty-five years in the field.

​

Being a creative person means that I’m always thinking of new projects and ideas. I am especially passionate about the fine arts, and my co-workers and students know that I incorporate art activities at every age. The education community has also begun to highlight the value of open-ended art by adding the ‘A’ for Arts in the STEAM curriculum.

​

As an artist, I tend to accumulate a lot of equipment along my journey. One of my favorite art possessions is the light table I use for Sand Animation. Drawing in sand is an organic art-form which produces a highly emotive art experience. It has a therapeutic, satisfying quality that I continue to enjoy creating as much as my viewers enjoy watching.

Over time, the concept for the Tamar books took form in the light of my sand table. Images of a girl who shared her creative process with other children morphed into an animated sand story. I called the girl Tamar, so she’d have the letters a-r-t in her name. Her stories are aimed at teaching basic art concepts and techniques.

​

But there’s more than just an artful masterpiece at the end of each book. The primary message in the Tamar series is that art enhances self-expression and emotional growth. Thus, publishing books about the benefits of open-ended art for children is the culmination of my life experience and my passion for creativity.
